Post herpetic neuralgia is chronic pain that lingers after a bout of shingles. Shingles, caused by the herpes zoster virus, is a common and painful illness that affects many people as they age. This is the same virus that brings us the chickenpox, but in the form of shingles it appears as a painful rash. The rash occurs as a band of raised, blister-like sores on the body’s trunk or on the side of the face.

For some people, once the rash has healed, pain along the affected nerves can last for months.

Treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia can include antidepressants, anticonvulsants or pain medication.
